Long-Term Food Storage: The Experiment

Several months ago, I began an experiment into long term food storage and thus far the experiment has been a success. This experiment has saved our family money and resulted in no spoiled food. Since beginning this experiment, I have shared this with others and others have begun the process. Several have asked me to share how we make this happen and I would like to take the next several days and share with you how we have learned and benefited form this process.

This experiment began as I saw food prices rise and wanted to find a way to save money. Another aspect to the experiment is to have food stored away  in case of an emergency. Since beginning the experiment, my family and I have approximately three months of food readily available.

Before you begin the long-term food storage process, take a look at a few advantages and disadvantages. The list below is quite small, but definitely worth considering.

The advantages of food storage:

  1. Saves Money – Not only does buying in bulk save money, but buying before food prices rise saves money as well.
  2. Emergency Preparedness – Having food available in case of an emergency is a valuable resource to taking care of your family.
  3. Food is available – The method we use for long term food storage makes the food readily available. We use a rotation method – more to come soon.

The disadvantages of food storage:

  1. Expensive to begin – At the beginning of this process, a larger grocery bill due to beginning the process.
  2. Space – Depending on what long-term food storage method and how much food you store, space will be priceless. I will share with you some tips to saves space in the midst of the process.
  3. Risk of spoiled food – As with storing any food for a long period of time, there is a risk of having the food spoil or having it ruin.

Over the next few days, I want to share with you the process we use for our method of long-term food storage.  While we do store food for our family, we are also prepared to share our blessings with others.

Stay tuned for more.

Believe while others…

While searching through my sermon illustrations, I ran across these words from William Arthur Ward. These particular words were sent to me by AsAManThinketh.net. Go sign-up for their email newsletter, you will enjoy it and it will spur you to greater growth and thought.

Believe while others…
By William Arthur Ward

Believe while others are doubting.

Plan while others are playing.

Study while others are sleeping.

Decide while others are delaying.

Prepare while others are daydreaming.

Begin while others are procrastinating.

Work while others are wishing.

Save while others are wasting.

Listen while others are talking.

Smile while others are frowning.

Commend while others are criticizing.

Persist while others are quitting.

Just a thought to pass along…

Websites

As the site changes are taking place, I get questions about how many website I keep track of each week. Well, I enjoy writing and different websites give me an avenue to write in different capacities. This website will begin a new chapter and even category of writings found elsewhere, but now found here.

I keep up with two other websites on a regular basis; one of personal ministry and the other of a business idea. Both website reach a different audience with similar material, but their purpose is to encourage. Take a moment and read more below.

The Preacher’s Pen

The Preacher’s Pen website began in 2005 as we moved from Scott Depot,WV to the Charleston, SC area. During this move I took on the role as the pulpit minister for the Mount Pleasant Church of Christ and I began to detail the steps in our journey. Those steps turned into a full-fledged website offering articles, EBooks, audio and a variety of other resources. The Preacher’s Pen website garnered over 396,000 unique visitors in 2010. Take a moment to give it a look. (Click the picture to go to the Preacher’s Pen website.)

After 15 years of ministry, I began the Gallagher Institute with the possibility of branching into the professional/motivational speaking world along with a journey into the area of life-coaching. Speaking and assisting others has always been part of my passion and I want to utilize the gifts and abilities I have been given to assist others in creating a better day today for a better life tomorrow. The Gallagher Institute is devoted to personal development and assisting others in achieving their goals.

New Format, New Content, Same Price

Beginning Tuesday, some changes will take place on the GallaghersOnline.com website. These changes will incorporate some of the material from a few past websites that I have ran and been running. I will move many of those thoughts over to this page and make this a one-stop shop for a variety of things our family has learned. You can call this new phase – The Gallagher Adventure – Wide-Open.

The format will look different and the content will reach a broader audience than normal. The format will be user friendly with a few more ads for the products we use. The content will consist of the following:

  • HouseSaving Money One Dollar at a Time
  • Gardening
  • Home Improvement Tips
  • Recipes
  • Banking/Investing
  • Gaining Family Time
  • Traveling

These are just some of the topics which will make up the new content. This content comes from our own trials, experiences, mistakes and victories over the past several years. I am sure you will learned things which seem way to easy and even remind yourself of things you already knew, but forgot.

More to be announced soon, but stay tuned for a different look at the new site.

15 Things What I Wish I Knew as a High School Senior

At the age of 17, I graduated High School and found myself with a little knowledge, a nice piece of paper reading High School Diploma, an acceptance letter to college and a dream of sleeping the summer away. There are a few things I wish I would have known then. Being 19 years later, I thought I would share them with you.

  1. Live what is right.
  2. Debt stinks!
  3. Work like you mean it.
  4. Present choices determine future results.
  5. Friends come and go, but you have to live with yourself forever.
  6. Your parents do know what they are talking about.
  7. The job at Burger King stinks now, but you are developing a work ethic.
  8. Golf is better when you are young.
  9. Get a Mutual Fund fast.
  10. Keep a journal.
  11. God is really in control.
  12. You have no idea what you will do with your life, so get more skills.
  13. Knowing how to work on your own car is a good thing.
  14. Read on leadership, finance and personal development.
  15. Eat more ice cream when you are young.
